The city reports that its holding area occasionally houses prisoners for Michigan State Police, Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Ask which agency controls the case and release decision.

Before appearing at Taylor Police

Response timing and exemptions

The city generally must issue an initial response within five business days and can provide written notice of one extension of up to ten additional business days.

Law-enforcement records may be withheld or redacted when disclosure would interfere with proceedings, invade privacy, reveal confidential sources or techniques, threaten safety or harm a fair trial.

Why a recent transfer may be missing

A Taylor prisoner may be in transport, registry processing, fingerprint review, medical screening or a court movement before the public record becomes available.

Wayne County states that new inmates arriving from another agency or court cannot be released until jail registry processing is complete.

What the court handles

The 23rd District Court handles Taylor misdemeanor criminal cases for defendants age 17 and older and conducts preliminary examinations for felony cases arising in Taylor.

A felony that is bound over proceeds to the Wayne County Third Judicial Circuit Criminal Division.

The city’s current FAQ states that after-hours bond can be paid at the Taylor Police front desk with cash only.

Request counsel at the 23rd District Court

A person charged with a criminal offense has the right to ask about legal representation. At arraignment, tell the judge or magistrate when the defendant cannot afford an attorney and wants to apply for appointed counsel.

1. Do not assume an attorney is automatically assigned;
2. Complete the court’s financial screening;
3. Provide accurate income and household information;
4. Save the appointed lawyer’s name and number;
5. Tell counsel about urgent evidence or medical issues.

After Wayne County transfer

Wayne County conducts social visits by video. A person age 17 or older with acceptable government-issued photo identification is generally allowed one video visit per week for up to 30 minutes.

Visitors can use the Adult Detention Facility visitation center or the current approved remote-visit application.

Personal mail from family and friends

Wayne County digitally delivers personal letters, pictures and drawings through inmate tablets. Personal mail is not accepted at the Detroit street address.

Taylor Police property or vehicle

1. Call Taylor Police with the report number;
2. Ask where the vehicle was towed;
3. Ask whether a police release is required;
4. Ask whether the vehicle or item is held as evidence;
5. Use the city’s return-of-property form when instructed;
6. Bring photo identification and ownership documents.

Wayne County inmate property

Wayne County releases inmate property to a third party only after the inmate signs an official property-release form naming the recipient.

The recipient must show valid identification. Published property-office hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., excluding holidays and weekends.

Wayne proof of incarceration

Wayne County accepts requests for proof of incarceration containing the inmate’s name, inmate number and incarceration period.

The published fee is $10, and requests are processed on Mondays and Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Current-only search limitation

A released person may disappear from the live inmate inquiry. The court case, police report and proof-of-incarceration process are more useful for an older arrest.

Local routing tip

Taylor Police and the 23rd District Court are neighboring facilities on Goddard Road, but they have different entrances, records and payment responsibilities.

Wayne County Jail and the circuit criminal court are approximately 20 miles away at the Criminal Justice Center in Detroit. Confirm transfer before driving there.
