Enter at least the last name
OTIS requires either a last name or an offender number.
Start broad
Use the last name and first name. Leave uncertain filters blank at first.
Set the appropriate status
Use “All” when you need prisoners, parolees, probationers and recently discharged people.
Narrow a common name
Add gender, race, age or status only when those details are reliable.
Open every plausible result
Do not identify a person from the result-list name alone.

OTIS Wildcard, Age and Tattoo Search Rules
Use at least three leading letters
This can return names beginning with “Smi.” Entering fewer than three letters with an asterisk may produce no useful match.
OTIS searches a range
The age field operates with an approximate plus-or-minus three-year range. Use it to narrow common names, but leave it blank if the birth information may be inaccurate.
The wording must match exactly
OTIS performs an exact text search for a one- or two-word phrase. “Blue diamond” will not necessarily match “diamond – blue.”

What Each OTIS Status Means
Under prisoner status
Most people with this status are in prison, but MDOC notes that some may be on a writ, in a county jail, in federal or out-of-state custody, at Special Alternative Incarceration, out on bond or escaped.
Released under supervision
The person has left prison but remains subject to parole conditions. Parole may occur in Michigan or through an interstate compact.
Circuit-court probation
MDOC may supervise the probationer, but the sentencing county retains jurisdiction.
Escape status
These designations indicate escape from secure or nonsecure custody arrangements.
Parole or probation absconder
The person failed to report or otherwise left supervision. Probation absconders remain under the sentencing county’s jurisdiction.
No longer under MDOC jurisdiction for that sentence
The sentence may have ended through successful completion, maximum discharge or death.

Eligibility begins
The Parole Board jurisdiction or earliest release date marks when the prisoner may become eligible for parole consideration under the displayed sentence.
Release is not automatic
Parole is granted by the Michigan Parole Board. Eligibility does not create a promise or entitlement to immediate release.

How to Confirm the Prison Location and Handle Transfers
- Open the correct OTIS profile.
- Write down the exact facility name and abbreviation.
- Open MDOC’s official prison directory.
- Match the full facility name—not only the city.
- Confirm the street and mailing addresses separately.
- Call the specific facility for visiting, property or health-routing questions.
- Recheck OTIS before mailing or traveling because transfers can occur.
MDOC does not announce transfers in advance
Prison placement is based on bed space, security, programming, health care and mental-health needs. Advance transfer details are not released for security reasons.

- Families cannot require placement near home.
- A family transfer request is not accepted as a placement demand.

Start with the sentencing court
Most conviction and sentence information displayed in OTIS comes from court records. When the conviction, sentence or disposition is wrong, obtain clarification or a correcting order from the sentencing court.
- Save the OTIS page and incorrect field.
- Record the court file number and sentencing county.
- Obtain the official court register or certified disposition.
- Ask the clerk what correction procedure applies.
- Send the final correction through the official channel.

Parole, probation or absconder-status errors should be addressed through the appropriate supervising agent or office.

Transfer details are not released early
Wait for the updated OTIS location rather than relying on rumors from another prisoner or social media.
Reception-center visits are unavailable
New prisoners may spend 30–45 days in intake and classification before permanent placement.
Save the number—not only a screenshot
The MDOC number remains the most useful identifier after the profile, photograph or location changes.
Recheck before every payment or letter

Do not call the Parole Board for a prediction
