Michigan has 83 counties, and county jails are operated locally. Use the arrest location—not the person’s home address—to begin.
Collect the arrest details
Write down the full legal name, date of birth, approximate arrest time, city or township, arresting agency, vehicle location and any incident or citation number.
Identify the booking county
A city police department may transport the person to the county jail. Call the arresting agency when the destination is unknown.
Open the sheriff’s official inmate locator
Search the surname first. Avoid extra filters until you find possible matches, because suffixes, middle names and dates can be entered differently.
Match the identity carefully
Compare the birth date or age, booking date, arresting agency, physical description and subject number. Do not rely on a name alone.

Search Michigan criminal court cases for free
A booking page may use a short or preliminary charge description. The court record is the better source for the filed count, case number, judge, scheduled event and disposition.
MiCOURT click-by-click
- Use the spelling and date information shown on the booking or citation.
- Select the district court for misdemeanors and early felony proceedings when known.
- Match the case number, filing date, court and birth details before assuming it is the same person.
- Record the charge, judge, next event, bond and disposition.

Misdemeanor and early felony stages
District court commonly handles arraignment, bond, misdemeanor proceedings and preliminary stages of a felony case.

A felony that continues after district-court proceedings normally moves to circuit court. Search both levels when tracking the full history.
Official copy or certification
An online case summary is informational. Contact the clerk when a certified disposition, complaint, register of actions or judgment is needed.
Use OTIS for Michigan prison, parole and MDOC supervision
OTIS is free, but it is not a statewide arrest database or a county-jail search.
OTIS can include
- People currently in Michigan state prisons;
- Eligible parolees and probationers under MDOC supervision;
- People discharged from supervision within the public retention period;
- Public offense, status and location information.
OTIS does not include
- County jail or city lockup inmates;

Use the Michigan Sex Offender Registry only for registry questions
The registry is a free specialized public tool. It should not be presented as a complete arrest or criminal-history search.
- A name search requires both a first and last name, with partial names allowed.
- A registration or MDOC number can be used when known.
- An address search requires supporting location information such as city, county or ZIP code.
- No result means only that the person was not found in the public registry search—not that the person has no arrest or court history.
When the paid Michigan ICHAT search is worth using
ICHAT is the official Michigan State Police name-based public criminal-history search. It is useful for a statewide public-history check but is not the best first tool for a fresh arrest.

Request the arrest report, booking record or incident file
The arresting agency usually keeps its own police or incident report. The court maintains the court case, while MSP can process only records held by Michigan State Police.

Provide the person’s name, incident date, location, report number and the specific records requested.
Set a fee limit
Ask for an itemized estimate before processing costs exceed a stated amount. Searching may be free, but copying, redaction, media and staff time can produce fees.
Expect lawful redactions
Active investigations, confidential sources, victim privacy, medical information, juvenile records and other protected material may be withheld or redacted.
Keep the response and appeal instructions
Save the request, confirmation, estimate, produced records and any written denial or exemption explanation.

If Michigan State Police holds the record
Use the MSP portal only for records held by MSP. For a local arrest, request the report from the local police or sheriff that created it.

Once custody is confirmed, stop searching and begin the practical next-step checklist.
Confirm arraignment
Ask the jail which district court has jurisdiction, whether a case number exists and when the first appearance is expected.
Record the full bond order
Write down amount, bond type, payment location, accepted methods, release conditions and any other hold.
Ask about appointed counsel
If the person cannot afford a lawyer, ask the arraigning court or jail how the local indigent-defense request is completed.
Report urgent health concerns
Call the jail’s medical route for dangerous withdrawal, serious illness, self-harm risk or time-sensitive medication. Use 911 for an active emergency outside custody.
Check visitation rules
Confirm inmate number, visitor registration, identification, schedule, visit type, clothing and minor-child requirements through the facility.
Separate money accounts
Commissary, phone, tablet, video and bond payments can use different vendors. Follow only links published by the jail.
Plan property and vehicle pickup
Ask who holds the vehicle, what ID and owner authorization are required, and how the inmate authorizes property release.
Track the court after release
Release does not end the case. Save court dates, bond conditions, testing or reporting requirements and address-update instructions.
Consider custody notifications
When the county offers VINELink or another notification service, register for verified release or transfer updates rather than repeatedly refreshing an old booking page.

Why a free Michigan arrest search can miss a real record
The booking is too new
Intake, identification, medical screening and data entry may occur before the public roster updates.
The person was released
Some county portals show only current custody and remove a person after release.
The wrong county was searched

The case is not online
