Michigan Assault Arrest Records: Booking, Court & Jail Lookup

Michigan official-record search route

Michigan Assault Booking, Court Case & Jail Search Guide

A recent assault arrest may create several separate records: a county jail booking, a district-court case, a police report and, later, a Michigan criminal-history or corrections record.

This guide shows which official system to use, what each result means and what a family member should do next—including bond confirmation, court dates, visitation, calls, medical concerns, release monitoring and record requests.

County booking lookup MiCOURT case search MSP ICHAT records MDOC OTIS search
How one arrest moves through separate systems
1
Police arrest and intake Arresting agency, fingerprinting and county booking
2
County jail record Custody status, booking number, charge and possible bond
3
District-court case Arraignment, bond order, hearings and case activity
4
State record systems ICHAT criminal history or OTIS corrections supervision
An arrest is not a conviction. A booking page normally reflects allegations submitted by an arresting agency. Charges, bond terms and custody status can change after arraignment, prosecutor review or a later court order.

Start Here: Choose the Lookup That Matches Your Immediate Goal

Recent arrest

Is the person in jail right now?

Begin with the sheriff or county correctional facility where the arrest occurred. A new booking can appear there before it appears in a court or state record.

Go to county lookup routes →
Active case

Do you need charges, hearings or court status?

Search MiCOURT using the person’s name or case number. Confirm unclear or time-sensitive information directly with the listed district or circuit court.

Follow the court-search steps →
Background record

Do you need a Michigan criminal-history search?

Use ICHAT for publicly available Michigan criminal-history information maintained by the Michigan State Police. It is different from a live jail roster.

Use the ICHAT guide →
Corrections status

Was the person sentenced to state supervision?

Use OTIS when the person may be in an MDOC prison or under qualifying parole or probation supervision. OTIS is not a complete background check.

Use the OTIS guide →
Michigan search shortcut: Identify the county first. The county of residence is not always the county of arrest. Use the location of the alleged incident, arresting department, police report number or first court listed on release paperwork.

Michigan Assault Arrest Records Are Split Across Different Agencies

Record or system Best use What it may show What it usually does not prove
County jail booking Confirming recent or current custody Booking number, intake date, listed charges, housing facility, bond or release status Final charge, guilt, complete case history or final sentence
MiCOURT Case Search Following a Michigan court case Court, case number, charge entries, hearings, disposition and financial entries when publicly available Every document, sealed information or a guarantee that every recent update is already posted
MSP ICHAT Name-based Michigan public criminal-history search Eligible felony arrests and convictions plus reportable serious-misdemeanor information Warrants, suppressed records, juvenile records, federal records, tribal records or another state’s history
MDOC OTIS Checking qualifying state corrections supervision Offender number, status, prison location, parole or probation information and identifying details Every county-jail booking or the person’s complete criminal history
Police or sheriff report Obtaining incident or investigative records Agency-specific reports, subject to Michigan FOIA exemptions and redactions Automatic public access to protected victim, witness or active-investigation information
Do not stop after one “no result.” A recent arrestee may be undergoing intake, booked under a hyphenated name, held in a neighboring county, released before the roster refresh or transferred to another facility.

Information to Collect Before Searching

Identity details

  • Full legal first and last name
  • Middle name or middle initial
  • Date of birth or approximate age
  • Previous, maiden or hyphenated names
  • Known MDOC or booking number

Arrest details

  • City and county where the incident happened
  • Arresting police or sheriff’s department
  • Approximate arrest date and time
  • Police incident or report number
  • District court named on paperwork

Step 1: Search the Michigan County Jail Booking Record

Michigan does not use one universal public page for every county’s live jail bookings. Search the county that accepted the person into custody, then use MiCOURT to follow the related court case.

Identify the receiving county Use the arrest location, police department, hospital transport information or court paperwork. City police commonly lodge an arrestee at a county-operated jail.
Open the official sheriff or county correctional page Avoid pages designed to imitate county websites. Confirm that the page belongs to the county, sheriff or an official system linked directly by that agency.
Search the broadest name combination first Start with the complete last name. Add the first name, date of birth or booking date only when the results are too broad.
Save the identifiers—not just a screenshot Record the booking number, subject number, listed court, charge statute, bond type and next hearing. These details help staff locate the correct person by phone.
Call when the arrest was very recent Intake, identification, medical screening and database processing can delay an online result. Ask whether the person is still being processed or was transferred.

Another Michigan county Search the official county website for “Sheriff,” “Corrections,” “Inmate Lookup” or “Jail Roster.” Confirm the site’s ownership before submitting personal information or payment. Call the county sheriff’s published main number when no official online locator is offered.
Local intake tip: When staff cannot find the person by name, ask them to check alternate spelling, a recently assigned booking number, a city holding facility, hospital guard status or a transfer to another county.

How a Michigan Felony Assault Case Normally Moves Through Court

1. Arrest and booking Police take the accused into custody and the receiving jail completes intake.
2. District-court arraignment The charge is stated, rights are explained, bond is addressed and another date is scheduled.
3. Probable-cause conference The prosecutor and defense discuss the case, evidence, scheduling and possible resolution.
4. Preliminary examination The district judge decides whether sufficient probable cause exists to send a felony case forward.
5. Circuit-court proceedings A bound-over felony proceeds through arraignment, pretrial activity, plea discussions or trial.
6. Disposition and sentence The case may end through dismissal, plea, acquittal or conviction followed by sentencing.
Do not treat the first booking charge as permanent. Prosecutors may authorize different charges, counts may be amended and a case can resolve under a different statute than the original jail description.

Step 3: Search Michigan State Police ICHAT Criminal History

ICHAT is the Michigan State Police name-based tool for public criminal-history information maintained by the Criminal Justice Information Center. It is useful for a broader Michigan record search, but it is not designed as a real-time county jail locator.

Open the MSP Criminal History Records page Use the official state page and choose “Access ICHAT.” Open MSP Criminal History Records →
Create or access the required account Follow the ICHAT prompts. Review the current search fee and terms before submitting payment.
Enter accurate name and identity details A name-based search can return the wrong person when names are common. Compare all available personal descriptors.
Review arrest and disposition information together Look for the charge, arresting agency, court disposition and whether a record was later suppressed or set aside.
Contact the court when information appears incomplete The court of conviction is the best place to verify a case disposition or obtain certified court records.

ICHAT may include

  • Reportable Michigan felony arrests
  • Michigan felony convictions
  • Serious reportable misdemeanor information
  • Personal descriptors linked to the record
  • Available arrest and court-disposition entries

ICHAT does not include

  • Warrant information
  • Suppressed public records
  • Federal or tribal records
  • Juvenile and traffic records
  • Criminal history from another state
  • Every local misdemeanor
The Michigan State Police states that a public ICHAT name search requires a $10 payment per search. Confirm the displayed checkout amount before paying because agency fees and portal procedures can change.

Step 4: Use MDOC OTIS for Prison, Parole or Probation Status

The Offender Tracking Information System is operated for Michigan Department of Corrections information. Use it when an assault case has progressed to qualifying MDOC custody or supervision—not merely because a person was booked into a county jail.

Open OTIS Offender Search Open MDOC OTIS →
Start with last name and first name Add the offender number, age or other identifying fields only when needed to narrow the results.
Choose an appropriate status filter Available choices may include active offenders, prisoners, parolees, probationers, discharged offenders and absconders.
Compare identifying information Review age, status, marks, scars, tattoos and offender number before deciding that the record belongs to the person you seek.
Use the facility information for family services Once OTIS identifies the assigned prison, open that institution’s official MDOC page for visiting applications, phone and mailing rules.

OTIS support

Corrections information: 517-335-1426

Use OTIS support when an accommodation is required or you need assistance locating an MDOC-supervised offender.

Important limitation: MDOC says OTIS is not suitable as a complete criminal-background check and does not contain every jail stay, out-of-state case or conviction.

How to Interpret a Michigan Assault Booking or Court Result

Field What it generally means What to verify next
Booking date The date or time the receiving jail processed the person Whether this is a new arrest, transfer, surrender or return on another matter
Arresting agency The department responsible for the arrest or custody transfer Which agency holds the incident report and where a FOIA request belongs
Charge description A short label attached to an alleged offense The complete MCL statute, subsection and current court charge
Bond amount The amount or release condition entered at that stage Accepted payment method, no-contact terms, holds and whether the court changed the bond
Court of jurisdiction The court handling the current criminal matter Case number, clerk phone, next date, courtroom and hearing type
Hold or detainer Another legal reason that may prevent release Issuing county, court or agency and whether release is possible after the local bond is posted
Release date A posted or scheduled custody event Whether processing, another warrant, transport or a new court order has delayed actual release
Disposition The court outcome of a charge or case event Whether the count was dismissed, amended, resolved by plea, tried or sentenced

Common Michigan Assault Charge Labels

The exact statute and subsection matter more than a shortened jail label. The following examples are not a complete list of Michigan assaultive offenses.

MCL 750.81

Assault or assault and battery

The basic offense is generally listed as a misdemeanor carrying up to 93 days of imprisonment, a fine of up to $500, or both, unless another provision or enhancement applies.

Read the current statute
MCL 750.81a

Aggravated assault

This provision addresses assault without a weapon that causes a serious or aggravated injury. Relationship-based and repeat-offense provisions can affect the charge.

Read the current statute
MCL 750.82

Felonious assault

This is commonly associated with assault involving a dangerous weapon and is classified as a felony. The statute lists a maximum four-year imprisonment term, a fine of up to $2,000, or both.

Read the current statute
Domestic relationship language changes the analysis. A charge may include a spouse, former spouse, dating relationship, shared child, household member or former household member. Repeat convictions and victim status can also affect charging and penalties. Read the complete subsection shown in the court record.

A Loved One Was Just Arrested for Assault: What the Family Should Do Now

First 15 minutes

  1. Confirm the receiving jail and correct identity.
  2. Write down the booking or subject number.
  3. Ask whether intake is complete or still pending.
  4. Identify the court and expected arraignment route.
  5. Ask whether a bond is already listed.

Before paying or traveling

  1. Call the court or official jail bonding desk.
  2. Confirm the exact bond type and amount.
  3. Ask about holds, detainers or other warrants.
  4. Verify acceptable payment methods and identification.
  5. Confirm release-location and pickup instructions.

Health and medication concerns

  1. Call the jail’s official inmate-information number.
  2. State that the issue involves an urgent medical or mental-health concern.
  3. Provide medication name, dosage, prescriber and pharmacy.
  4. Do not deliver pills unless jail staff specifically authorize a procedure.
  5. Ask staff how medical information should be securely submitted.

Protect the court case

  1. Do not discuss incident facts on recorded jail calls.
  2. Do not contact an alleged victim when a no-contact condition may apply.
  3. Save release documents and every future court date.
  4. Ask the court about appointed-counsel screening when the accused cannot afford counsel.
  5. Arrange reliable transportation to every required court appearance.

Simple booking-desk call script

“I am trying to confirm whether [full legal name and date of birth] is currently in your custody. The arrest may have occurred in [city] on [date]. Can you confirm the booking number, court of jurisdiction, current bond information and whether there are any holds preventing release?”

Michigan Assault Arrest Bond and Release Checklist

Bond is controlled by the court. A jail page may display an amount, but the court of jurisdiction should confirm the current order, accepted payment form and release conditions.

01

Ask what type of bond was ordered

The record may refer to personal recognizance, cash, surety or another court-approved release arrangement. Do not assume the displayed dollar amount explains the complete order.

02

Ask about nonfinancial conditions

Assault cases can involve no-contact restrictions, location limits, substance testing, firearm restrictions or other conditions. The released person must receive and understand the written order.

03

Check for another hold

A local bond payment may not produce release when another county, probation department, immigration authority or court has entered a valid hold or warrant.

Questions for the bonding desk

  • What is the exact bond amount and type?
  • Has the arraignment judge changed it?
  • Which payment forms are accepted?
  • Is the payment made at the jail or court?
  • Are government-issued ID or additional documents required?
  • Are there other holds or detainers?
  • What fees are nonrefundable?
  • Where will the person be released?
Bond scam warning: Never pay a caller demanding gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or secret payment instructions. Use the phone number published on the official county or court website and call back independently.

Visitation, Calls, Commissary, Mail and Release Planning

Family task What to do Common mistake to avoid
Schedule visitation Use the official jail’s visitation page, create the approved vendor account when required and verify onsite versus remote options. Traveling to the jail without a reservation, approved ID or confirmation that the inmate is eligible to visit
Receive phone calls Set up the vendor named by the jail. Confirm that the phone number can accept calls and that account deposits are assigned to the correct service. Discussing witnesses, evidence or incident facts on a recorded call
Add commissary funds Use only the jail’s official deposit instructions and confirm the inmate name and number. Confusing commissary funds with separate phone, tablet, video-visit or bond accounts
Send mail Read the facility’s current mail policy before sending anything. Some jails use an offsite scanning address or electronic-message vendor. Mailing cash, stamps, oversized cards, prohibited photos, packages or material directly to the wrong address
Provide property or clothing Call before visiting. Most facilities restrict property drop-offs and may accept clothing only for a specific court or release purpose. Arriving with personal property that staff are not authorized to accept
Plan release pickup Confirm actual release clearance, pickup location, transportation and compliance with no-contact or location restrictions. Relying solely on an estimated outdate when holds or processing can delay release
Visit preparation: Bring the exact government-issued identification required by the facility, arrive early and avoid clothing, bags, phones or other items prohibited in the visitation area. Rules vary by Michigan county.

Victim and Safety Notifications Through MI-VINE

MI-VINE provides custody and court-status information plus notification services. Registration can help victims, family members and concerned residents receive updates when a participating offender’s custody status changes.

How to register

  1. Open the official Michigan MI-VINE information page.
  2. Follow the VINELink registration route.
  3. Search using the offender’s identity or available case details.

Toll-free: 800-770-7657

The State of Michigan describes the service as free and available around the clock for custody or court-status information and notification.

Safety rule: Do not depend on an automated alert as your only protection. Maintain a personal safety plan and contact 911 when there is an immediate threat.

How to Request a Police Report, Booking File or Other Arrest Record

The correct records holder depends on who created the document. Submit the request to the agency that possesses the record rather than sending one broad request to every Michigan office.

City police report

Request it from the city police department that investigated the incident. Use its official records or FOIA instructions.

Sheriff report or jail file

Request it from the county sheriff or correctional records unit. Ask whether booking photos or jail records require a separate request.

Michigan State Police record

Use the MSP Records Request Portal when the Michigan State Police created or holds the requested public record.

Include in the request

  • Incident or report number
  • Date, approximate time and location
  • Names of involved people
  • Specific documents or media requested
  • Preferred electronic delivery method
  • Your contact information

Expect possible limitations

  • Redaction of protected personal information
  • Withholding of exempt investigative material
  • Restrictions involving victims or witnesses
  • Fees for search, review, copying or media
  • Additional time for a complex request

Practical Michigan Search Problems and Fixes

No booking appears after an arrest

Wait for intake processing, then call the receiving county. Ask whether the person is at a city lockup, hospital, neighboring county or another temporary holding location.

The jail charge and court charge differ

Use the court’s current complaint and docket as the better indicator of the filed case. Jail labels can reflect the initial arresting-agency submission.

MiCOURT shows several similar names

Match the court, filing date, date of birth, middle initial and charge. Contact the clerk instead of attaching the wrong case to a person.

ICHAT shows no result

The record may be nonpublic, suppressed, not reportable, outside Michigan or entered under different identity details. Check the relevant court and county arresting agency.

OTIS shows no offender

The person may be in county custody, not under MDOC supervision, discharged beyond the displayed period or recorded under different identifying information.

Bond was paid but release is delayed

Ask the jail whether there is another hold, warrant, transport requirement, identity issue or release-processing delay. Obtain a receipt and record the staff instructions.

10 Michigan Assault Arrest Record Questions Answered

1. Where can I find a Michigan assault arrest made today?
Start with the official jail or sheriff locator for the county that received the arrested person. A newly processed booking will usually appear there before it appears in ICHAT or OTIS. Call the jail when the arrest was very recent and the online search is still blank.
2. Is there one statewide Michigan jail booking search?
Michigan county jails generally maintain separate booking systems. Determine the county of custody and use that sheriff or correctional facility’s official locator. Statewide tools such as ICHAT and OTIS serve different purposes and are not substitutes for every live county roster.
3. Does an assault booking record mean the person was convicted?
No. A booking reflects an arrest and allegations at that stage. The prosecutor may change or decline charges, and guilt must be established through a plea or court judgment. Review the court disposition rather than treating the arrest label as a conviction.
4. How do I find the next court date after a Michigan assault arrest?
Search MiCOURT using the defendant’s name or case number and select the court of jurisdiction shown in the jail record. Because hearing times can change, confirm the date, courtroom and appearance requirements with the court clerk.
5. What information does Michigan ICHAT leave out?
Michigan State Police states that ICHAT does not provide warrant information, suppressed records, federal records, tribal records, juvenile records, traffic records, criminal history from other states or every local misdemeanor.
6. Can I use MDOC OTIS to find someone arrested yesterday?
Usually not when the person remains in a county jail awaiting court. OTIS is designed for qualifying Michigan Department of Corrections custody or supervision information. Search the county jail first for a recent arrest.
7. How can I confirm the bond amount?
Note the bond displayed by the jail, then call the court of jurisdiction or official jail bonding desk. Ask for the current amount, bond type, payment methods, release conditions and any other holds that could prevent release.
8. Can a family member visit immediately after booking?
Not always. The arrested person may be in intake, medically screened, restricted from visits or not yet assigned to housing. Check the facility’s official visitation page and schedule the visit through the approved process before traveling.
9. How do I receive notice when an arrested person is released?
Michigan residents can use MI-VINE to check participating custody or court status and register for available notifications. The service can be accessed online or by calling 800-770-7657. Automated notifications should not replace a personal safety plan.
10. How can I get the police report for an assault arrest?
Submit a records or FOIA request to the police or sheriff’s agency that created the report. Include the incident number, date, location and specific records requested. Protected information may be redacted or withheld under applicable law.
Public-record and legal-use notice: This page explains how to locate and interpret public Michigan records; it does not determine guilt or provide a complete criminal-history certification. Verify time-sensitive custody, bond and hearing information with the jail or court of record. Do not use arrest information to harass, threaten, discriminate unlawfully or misidentify a person.
