For the most current specific charge, court case or bond type, contact the court of jurisdiction rather than relying only on the jail portal.

For a Westland arrest that normally means the 18th District Court first, followed by Wayne County Third Circuit Court after a felony bindover.

Cases handled

The 18th District Court handles misdemeanor and felony cases arising within Westland city limits.

Misdemeanors generally remain in district court. A felony begins there for arraignment and preliminary proceedings before a possible transfer to Third Circuit Court.

Option 1: Appear in person

A person with an outstanding 18th District Court warrant may appear at the courthouse:

• Monday through Wednesday;
• Between 8 and 10:30 a.m.

For criminal cases, the court states that an attorney will be available before the person appears before the judge or magistrate.

When the case changes courts

A Westland felony normally starts in the 18th District Court. If the preliminary examination is waived or the case is bound over, later felony proceedings continue in Wayne County Third Circuit Court.

Save both the district and circuit case numbers because they may differ.

Wayne County accepted jail methods

• Cash in denominations of $20 or larger;
• Cashier’s check payable to Sheriff of Wayne County;
• Certified check payable to Sheriff of Wayne County;
• Discover, Visa, MasterCard and American Express;
• Current card-processing charge: 8%.

Money orders, personal checks and loose or rolled coins are not accepted for jail bond payments.

18th District Court payment warning

The court accepts several methods for ordinary fines and costs, but specifically states that credit-card payments cannot be accepted for bonds, restitution or escrow.

Inmate telephone rules

• Traditional collect calling may be available;
• Prepaid account options may be available;
• Inmate-funded calls may be available;
• Calls to mobile phones are supported through the jail system;
• Telephone privileges depend on security level and conduct;
• Calls may be monitored or recorded.

The inmate places the call. The jail does not function as a message-taking service for ordinary family communication.

Adult social visitation

• All social visitation is non-contact video;
• Visitors must generally be at least 17;
• One video visit per week;
• Maximum visit length: 30 minutes;
• Government-issued photo identification required;
• Remote and onsite video options are available.

Ordinary family mail

The Criminal Justice Center states that ordinary letters, pictures and drawings from family and friends are delivered digitally through the inmate tablet’s free Facility Messages profile.

Do not assume that ordinary physical letters should be mailed directly to the jail. Follow the current digital-message instructions shown by the facility.
