What the city may do

The city can grant the request, deny it, grant part and deny part, identify an online record or issue a written extension when permitted under Michigan FOIA.

Active-investigation, privacy, confidential-source, safety, juvenile and fair-trial protections may require redaction or withholding.

Identity and accuracy warning

Kent County warns that inmate information changes quickly and that a person may have used false identification.

Confirm identity through several matching details and do not use a jail result alone for employment, housing or other legal action.

Monday–Thursday:

On the first Thursday of each month, the court publishes hours of 8 a.m.–4 p.m.

When to move the search

If the 62-A register indicates bindover, the felony continues under a circuit-court file for circuit arraignment, pretrial proceedings, plea, trial, sentence and judgment.

The district and circuit case numbers may differ. Save both.

Important payment restrictions

• Personal checks are not accepted;
• Split payments are not allowed;
• Use one payment method for each transaction;
• Credit-card fees may apply;
• The county publishes a possible card-fee range of 8%–20%.

Confidential attorney application

The 62-A District Court links to Kent County’s confidential online application for appointed counsel.

The application asks for current personal, household, employment, financial and case information. Estimate accurately when an exact amount is unknown.

• Tablets are available daily from 8 a.m.–10 p.m.;
• Messages and images are monitored;
• Published incoming message fee: $0.50;
• Published incoming picture fee: $1;
• Some content is free;
• Other tablet content is published at $0.05 per minute.

Inmate-account deposits

• Online or telephone service: TouchPay;

• Lobby kiosks are available in visitor and processing areas;
• Cashier’s checks or money orders can be brought to the facility;
• Published per-transaction maximum: $500;
• Published daily maximum: $1,500;
• Maximum three transactions per day;

Personal mail address

Personal letters, postcards and greeting cards must be sent to the off-site Smart Communications processing center.

How scanned mail works

1. Print the full inmate name and Booking/ID number clearly;
2. Include the sender’s complete return address;
3. Smart Communications opens and scans the mail;
4. The inmate reads the scanned copy on a jail tablet;
5. The county states that mail is typically available 24–72 hours after reaching the processor.

Legal mail

Qualifying legal mail remains accepted directly at the Kent County Correctional Facility under the jail’s legal-mail procedures.

Family correspondence should not be falsely marked as attorney or legal mail.

Vehicle or evidence held by Wyoming Police

1. Call the Police Department with the report number;
2. Ask where the vehicle was towed;
3. Ask whether a police release is required;
4. Ask whether the property is held as evidence;
5. Bring photo identification and proof of ownership;
6. Do not travel until pickup is authorized.

Call 616-632-6400 and ask for the current property-release procedure.

Confirm whether the inmate must sign an authorization, what identification the recipient needs and when pickup is permitted.

Kent County links users to VINELink for telephone or email notifications when qualifying inmate custody information changes.

MDOC transfer search

Use the Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS search after a person enters state prison, parole or probation jurisdiction.

What the Records Division maintains

Kent County states that its Sheriff Records Division handles FOIA requests, public inquiries and inmate records, including available mugshots, fingerprints and identifying details.

What ICHAT provides

Michigan State Police ICHAT provides publicly available name-based criminal-history information maintained in the state repository.

The current published public search fee is $10 per search.

What ICHAT does not provide

ICHAT is not a live inmate locator and does not display warrants or suppressed records. It does not replace the police narrative or certified court disposition.

Local routing tip

Wyoming Police and the 62-A District Court are separate facilities on DeHoop Avenue. The Kent County Correctional Facility and Sheriff’s Office are on Ball Avenue in Grand Rapids.
